Construction Commences on the Australian Hockey Centre at Curtin University

A significant milestone has been reached for the Australian Hockey Centre, with construction officially commencing on the $163 million redevelopment at Curtin University. Designed by Hunt Architects, the project will deliver a facility that is set to become the world’s leading high-performance hockey centre and one of the premier sporting environments in Australia. The Centre will also be the new dedicated home for Hockey Australia’s High Performance Program.

  • High-performance training environments situated within Curtin University.
  • Integrated sports science, medicine, recovery and performance analysis facilities.
  • Cutting-edge recovery and analysis capabilities.
  • A new 1,000-seat stadium (expandable to 10,000 spectators for major events).
  • Four outdoor pitches plus indoor courts.

The project has received strong media coverage in Perth Now and Business News, alongside stakeholder announcements from VenuesWest, Hockey Australia and Hockey WA. Hunt Architects is proud to see the vision move from design into construction. We look forward to collaborating closely with ADCO and the broader project team to deliver a facility that will shape the future of Australian hockey for generations to come.

Embedded Within Curtin University

Located within Curtin University’s Bentley Campus, the Australian Hockey Centre will strengthen the relationship between elite sport, research and education. The proximity to academic programs in sport science and allied health creates opportunities for collaboration, innovation and future-focused athlete development. The design responds to its campus context through landscaped public realms, pedestrian-friendly connections and clearly defined arrival experiences. The new central boulevard and activated edges encourage engagement from students, athletes and the broader community.

Supporting the Entire Hockey Ecosystem

While the facility will support Australia’s highest-performing athletes — including the Kookaburras and Hockeyroos — it is equally designed to serve community hockey, school programs and grassroots development across Western Australia. The flexible stadium capacity enables both local competition and major international events. The provision of additional pitches and indoor courts significantly expands participation opportunities, ensuring a fully aligned pathway from emerging talent to international representation.
