A State-of-the-Art Headquarters in Perth

Symbolic of the Pilbarra's forms, colour and materiality - creating a strikingly modern building that evokes the ancient landscape.

Roy Hill’s headquarters and remote control centre for North-West mining operations is located at Perth Airport. The project was technically demanding, having to meet Perth Airport, Civil Aviation Safety Authority, and Federal approval. Specialised expertise was required in the execution of acoustic treatment to the Control Room roof, ergonomic design of the operator’s consoles and complex integration of technology.

This is where many of the mining operations are controlled from in real-time. The building houses state-of-the-art technology which remotely operates all of Roy Hill’s mining operation and rail movement, to shipping alternatives in the north-west. It’s anything but a corporate head-office, it’s a fully functional part of the Pilbara mine site.

The exterior of the building communicates a strong corporate identity, complete with a stone-clad courtyard, reflection ponds, and the use of colours, materials and landscape themes to reflect the location of the Roy Hill mine and the Pilbara. Inside, an impressive entry atrium incorporates a three storey video wall with ever changing colours and patterns.

A custom-designed carpet with intricate tile patterns further instils the connection to the renowned Pilbara gorges. Dynamic roof forms and a glass metallic palette of materials define the aesthetic with the overall architectural response being light and transparent.
